Each character begins with four Lenses, chosen from the core set:

• Calling & Fear
• Anchor & Wound
• Gift & Debt

However, before play begins, one of those four Lenses is removed and replaced by the Mark of the Divine. It is through this Mark of the Divine Mark that the character may be able to Make Miracles.

This missing Lens represents something lost, overwritten, or consumed by the character’s divine connection. The process of choosing which Lens is lost may vary:

• The player chooses the lost Lens
• The GM chooses, with player consent (for a more adversarial tone)
• The choice is negotiated collaboratively
• The Lens is randomized by die roll or oracle

This missing Lens defines a central tension in the character's origin:

• What was sacrificed?
• What divine truth took its place?
• Is the absence healing, haunting, or unknown?

Therefore, characters begin with three active Lenses and one Mark of the Divine, forming their core identity profile.
