Forgotten Gods is played as a hybrid variation of Fate Core and Powered-by-the-Apocalypse. The character is comprised of five defined Lenses (Aspects) each with three Expressions (tags), which are rolled to sway the dice.
All player-characters have been touched somehow by a God–perhaps forgotten, perhaps forbidden, perhaps forsaken. This encounter has awakened the character to the fluid nature of experience and made clear the dramatic impact personal belief has on the shape of reality itself. The game focuses on the nature of your characters evolving identity, encouraging rapid and fluid changes to your Lens & Expression line-up.
You start as one touched by a God. This means one of your Core Aspects has already been claimed, devoured, subsumed by the God who marked you. It is possible to go further down the path of becoming an instrument of a Forgotten God. See the Titles of the Touched for more info.
The Character Creation Process
1. Define Four Core Aspects (Lenses)
- Choose four lenses to define your identity. These can be any combination of:
- A title/name (e.g., Fear of Being Erased, Gift of the Sun-Fire)
- Define an Imperative - The call-to-action, what this Lens pushes you to do
- Three Expressions — concrete manifestations of those Lenses in your life. The best Expressions cut both ways so that they can be used to your character's benefit and detriment.
2. Gain the Mark of the Divine
- Name the God that has marked you by your exposure to it
-
- Remove one of your four Lenses
- Replace it with your character's Mark of the Divine
- You may choose to define which Aspect was lost at the time of creation, or you may allow the GM or another player to choose which Aspect was obliterated by the Mark of the Divine. Perhaps you'll let the dice decide. This process should be a negotiation, not a punishment. It is a key element that your character has lost something integral to them.
- Define the Mark of the Divine Aspect
- Define the God's Imperative - The call-to-action, what this Lens pushes you to do. This change should reflect how the God's touch has altered your identity.
- Create three Expressions for this Mark (Just as with any other Lens)
- Assign a 5-box Rupture Track for this Lens
Note:
When a god overwrites an Aspect, it doesn’t erase the character’s story; it reframes it. Their way of being shifts, altering how every choice, debt, and wound is understood.
3. Track the Cost: Stress and Transformation
- Assign each Lens Aspect a 4-box Rupture Track
- You may choose, instead, to assign 16 boxes across the four lens Aspects
- no box may have less than two boxes (these are relatively fragile Lens Aspects)
- No box may have more than six boxes (these are stable Lens Aspects)
- When all boxes of a Rupture-Track are marked, that Lens is transformed somehow… ruptured and replaced—evolved. You must replace that Lens Aspect with a new one.
4. Flesh Out the Character
- Choose a name, look, and background
- Describe your life before the god’s touch
- What did your God take and what did it leave behind?
