While Forgotten Gods takes a lot from Fate, the core play loop differs from Fate Core’s “pick a move first” structure.
- Describe what you want to do. Speak in plain fiction; don’t worry about naming an action.
- Roll 4dF + Expression or Lens Aspect ± Modifiers.
- Determine the level of success.
- Fail – You don’t achieve your intent, and the GM may introduce a complication.
- Weak Success – You succeed, but at a cost or with limited effect.
- Strong Success – You achieve your intent fully, often with added benefit.
- Define the result:.
- The GM and players interpret the outcome together, mapping it to one of the five core actions (Assess, Attack, Defend, Establish, Overcome)
Fate Core Loop:
Conceive Action –> Declare Move –> Modify & Roll Dice –> Modify Results –> Discover Outcome
Forgotten Gods Loop:
Conceive Action –> Modify & Roll Dice –> Modify Results –> Define Outcome
The Fate Core style moves are preserved in the rules as a convenient and familiar means of framing the action. Forgotten Gods removes the need to declare a move up front. The GM interprets the player’s intent and maps it to an action behind the scenes.
