The following outlines the fundamental mechanics that govern play in Forgotten Gods.
Core Play Loop
The core action in Forgotten Gods is simpler than Fate Core’s “pick a move first” structure.
- Describe what you want to do. Speak in plain fiction; don’t worry about naming an action.
- Roll 4dF + up to 3 Expression or Lens Aspect ± Modifiers.
- Determine the level of success.
- Fail – You don’t achieve your intent, and the GM may introduce a complication.
- Weak Success – You succeed, but at a cost or with limited effect.
- Strong Success – You achieve your intent fully, often with added benefit.
- Modify the Results:
- Invoke up to 3 Scene Expressions (each gives you +1 to the result)
- Invoke your Character Lens Aspects (for a fate-point. Each Aspect gives you +2 to the result)
- Mark a tick on your Aspect's Rupture Track (Only one may be marked at a time, and it gives a +3 to the result)
- Define the outcome:.
- The GM and players interpret the outcome together, mapping it to of the five core actions (Assess, Attack, Defend, Establish, Overcome)
Lenses and Expressions
- Personal Expressions are invoked for mechanical effects (+1 to roll bonuses, etc).
- Up to three Character Expressions may be stacked to sway the dice
- Scene Expressions may be brought in after the roll to sway the results,
- Lens Aspects are invoked for mechanical effects, by:
- Spending a Fate Point (Grants +2 to the roll)
- Marking off the Aspect's Rupture Track (Grants +3 to the roll)
Miracles and Divine Action
- Characters may perform miracles through their *Mark of the Divine*.
- Small miracles (purely narrative) have no mechanical cost.
- Major miracles require a roll and may shift a Stress Track.
- Divine acts risk destabilizing identity. Miracles often lead to Rupture unless anchored by clarity or sacrifice.
Fate Points and Invocation
- Fate Points remain in use to:
- Invoke a Lens Aspect directly (not Expressions).
- Accept a compel or narrative cost.
- Expressions are the primary mechanic for roll bonuses and evolution.
Player Tools
- Expressions & Aspects: The Hierarchy of Permanence - How long to Expressions and Aspects last?
- The Shift Economy - What does success really get you?
GM Tools
- Hard & Soft Moves - The GM's moves always land… Fate Points and Expression rolls mitigate them
Special Moves
Evolution and Burnout
- If an Expression becomes obsolete (e.g., due to narrative loss), it may be changed.
- Ruptured Expressions may be replaced at milestones or after significant character growth.
