Skadegamutc

(Wabanaki)
Burn the Body-2, Name the Spirit-3, Break the Desecration Cycle-4

It walks on two legs but wears no warmth. It moves like a memory you’re trying to forget. The Skadegamutc is a ghost-witch, a spirit corrupted by unnatural death and forbidden rites. Neither truly dead nor fully alive, it lingers near the living to feed on warmth, identity, and spiritual residue. It can appear human at first, quiet perhaps, isolated. But those who stay close begin to lose track of who they are, what they love, and why they matter. It does not just haunt you. It hollows you.

Soft Moves

  • A PC’s breath fogs even in warm air.
  • A friendly face seems distant, blurred, introducing Familiar Estrangement.
  • The Skadegamutc appears on camera but not in person. It gains Encroaching-1.
  • A child's drawing depicts the creature, even though they've never seen it.
  • A shadow moves ahead of its source.
  • Someone forgets the PC’s name for just a moment and laughs nervously.

Hard Moves

  • Apply Identity Erosion-2 to force a PC to temporarily forget the face of someone they love.
  • Apply Disassociation-2 to force a PC to fail to recognize their own reflection.
  • The Skadegamutc passes through a group. One PC forgets they were ever part of it. Apply Unanchored-3.
  • A memory-rich item (photo, tattoo, token) becomes meaningless. Take Echo Devoured-3.

Custom Moves

  • When a PC is alone and exposed, the Skadegamutc may “touch” them without being seen. Roll+Logos.
    1. On a 10+: They resist the chilling presence.
    2. On a 7–9: They shiver and take Spiritual Numbness-1.
    3. On a miss: They forget something important until reminded — apply Partial Hollowing-2.
  • When a PC tries to confront or name the Skadegamutc aloud, they must burn a tag tied to memory or identity to complete the act. Success grants them Named the Witch and allows one other PC to act as if the danger is tangible for one move.

GM Notes

  • Look: A withered human shape in shadowy rags, eyes glowing faintly like embers. Voice like cracked ice. May appear as a loved one or as pure absence.
  • Tell: The air drops ten degrees. Footsteps echo wrong. Reflections delay.
  • Goal: To unmake identity and connection, feeding on what makes the self real.
  • Tactics: Stalks isolated or emotionally strained targets. Avoids direct confrontation unless empowered by forgotten pain. May possess or echo voices of lost loved ones.
  • Counters:
    1. Fire, sacred rites, and memory-sharing rituals weaken its grip.
    2. Naming it aloud requires will, sacrifice, and truth — but strips it of stealth.
    3. Destroying or honoring the desecrated remains from which it emerged may sever its presence entirely.
